Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater is one of the Southeast's premier recreation destinations, bringing together athletics, entertainment, hospitality, and community into a single, cohesive park experience. Conceived as a regional destination and designed to serve generations of residents and visitors, the project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and landscape architecture can create a place that is both highly functional and unforgettable.
The PLOT Studio principals led the landscape architecture and site design of this transformational project while at a previous firm, shaping nearly every aspect of the visitor experience. From overall site planning and grading to pedestrian circulation, connectivity, and outdoor gathering spaces, every element was designed to work together as a unified campus that is intuitive, inviting, and built for year-round use.
The park includes seven unique playgrounds, an extensive network of walking trails, championship baseball, softball, and multi-purpose athletic facilities, a tennis complex, a destination amphitheater, and a resort-style aquatic center featuring a lazy river, waterslides, splash pad, lap pool, and family recreation areas. The campus also features an on-site RV park, allowing visitors to extend their stay and supporting the park's role as a regional destination for tournaments, concerts, festivals, and multi-day events. Carefully integrated plazas, landscapes, and public spaces connect each destination, creating a seamless experience whether visitors are competing, celebrating, or simply enjoying an afternoon outdoors.
More than a collection of amenities, Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater has become a defining civic destination and a significant economic driver for the region. The project reflects a design philosophy centered on creating places that strengthen communities, encourage active lifestyles, support tourism, and leave a lasting impact long after construction is complete.
